It's Gwendolyn! Miss World 1st Runner-Up. Congratulations to another pinay beauty!

(UPDATE) Miss Philippines Gwendolyn Ruais became the highest placing Pinay candidate in this year's beauty pageant season with a runner-up finish in the 2011 Miss World competition held on Sunday, November 6 at Earls Court in London.

Gwendolyn placed second to Miss Venezuela, Ivian Sarcos-Colmenares, in a glittering and gallant performance besting hundreds of candidates from Albania to Zimbabwe. The coronation was broadcast to one billion viewers in 150 countries.

The French-Filipino model, who earned her Bachelor's Degree in Business Management last year, said she did it for country. “People asked me why I stopped modeling when I was doing well. My answer, when you’re modeling, you do it for yourself. It’s a personal thing. But when you join Miss World Philippines, you represent your country.  You’re an ambassador.  You can help others in the causes you believe in,” Gwendolyn said in an interview with Miss World judges.

Miss Puerto Rico, Amanda Victoria Perez, came third.

"I believe that the next Miss World should be a woman of responsibility and reason," said Ivian, who works for a broadcasting company and has a Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources, before winning the title.

"I believe the woman should be committed to the organization and help people in need. Beauty with a heart," added the Venezuelan.
The pageant was back in its home city to celebrate its 60th anniversary.

Meanwhile, around 50 feminists staged a demonstration outside, waving placards reading "Objectification won't achieve world peace", "Being a woman is not a competition" and "Sexism is pretty ugly".

Around a half dozen were veterans of the 1970 pageant protest, which caused a major disturbance.

Inside the Earls Court Two auditorium in west London, the few thousand fans cheered, waved national flags and shouted for their favorites.

To whittle them down to the 15 semi-finalists, several point-scoring rounds were held during the contestants' tour of Britain over the previous two weeks, with the results revealed on stage.

Miss Venezuela topped the interview round; Miss Dominican Republic, Marianly Tejada Burgos, was named the general sports champion; home favorite Miss England, Alize Lily Mounter, won the beach beauty title, while Miss Kazakhstan, Zhanna Zhumaliyeva, was named top model.

The crowd were played clips from the talent round -- where performers sang, danced and gave piano recitals -- won by Miss Chile, Gabriela Paz Pulgar Luco.

Miss Ghana, Stephanie Adwoa Agyeiwaa Karikari, and Miss Indonesia, Astrid Ellena Indriana Yunadi, were the joint winners of the beauty with a purpose category, where contestants can highlight a charity project.

With the scores in and only the top 15 going through to the semi-final, Miss Puerto Rico topped the leaderboard, ahead of Miss Venezuela, Miss Philippines, Miss Ukraine and Miss Scotland.

The final seven, chosen by the judges, were Miss England, Miss Korea, Miss Philippines, Miss Puerto Rico, Miss Scotland, Miss South Africa and Miss Venezuela.

It was announced that Ordos in Inner Mongolia, China, will host the 2012 competition. With an Agence France-Presse report

 Amazing view of Tagaytay Higlands.

A breathtaking view of nature overlooking the lush greeneries of Tagaytay, an uphill road course through rolling hills, and never-before-opened running areas set the Nathan Ridge Run apart from your common fun run.
Slated for November 20th at the Tagaytay Highlands, the race is organized by renowned multi-sport accessory brand Nathan Performance Gear (Nathan), who will challenge Filipino runners in a unique test of athleticism, endurance and environmental advocacy.
Nathan will provide participants access to previously off-limits tracks, resulting in a fresh, challenging and steep uphill road course meant to push the limits of each runner. While in the venue, runners can also take advantage of several exclusive perks, including access to some of Highlands’ amenities and discounts.
The Nathan Ridge Run features three race divisions for the beginner to the elite with its 5K, 10K and 21K road distances. Runners are set to get their hearts racing for health and for nature. Beginners can hone their craft and endurance, while veteran athletes can improve their level of game.
In the spirit of greener practices, the use of environmentally harmful plastic cups will be ditched in favor of free Nathan handheld sports bottles included in the race kit or the racers’ own hydration gear. Runners can use innovative bottles such as the Nathan Quickdraw Plus, which provides them easy access to hydration while on-the-go.
Runners can park, refill, hydrate and go for gold. Simple and efficient, the Quickdraw Plus is best for keeping dehydration at bay; no need to wait until the next check point to replenish, and no need to use harmful disposables.
Instead of the typical water stations you see in most city races, where plastic cups are lined up for the taking and disposed of as soon as runners are sufficiently hydrated, Nathan will be setting up conveniently placed refilling stations in different points of the road.

PERFECT TEN: DC Opens 10th Philippine store in SM Megamall

Back in 1993, when DC was established, DC co-founders Ken Block and Damon Way agreed upon a mission: to make a significant change in skateboard shoe style and elevate skateboarding performance to the highest level. In 1994, DC introduced protective lace loops into the world of skateboarding. This was a small step for general footwear design but a massive leap for skateboarding footwear.

In following years, DC took this design philosophy and embedded it into everything that the brand stands for. DC built a world-class team of professional skateboarding, snowboarding, surfing, BMX, motocross and rally athletes — with each athlete enhancing the brand’s signature products, and supports its promotional efforts.

DC has expanded into other initiatives such as the DC Artist Projects™, Double Label™ Projects and Remix Series™. As culturally relevant as pro-model skate shoes, these projects showcase design collaborations with prominent and influential street artists and musicians. Featured artists have included Kaws and Phil Frost, while musicians Travis Barker (+44, The Transplants and Blink 182) and Mike Shinoda (Fort Minor and Linkin Park) have also developed the Remix Series™ and Groove Armada.

Ever mindful of its roots as a performance skateboard shoe company, DC continues to invest in the development of skateboarding via grassroots initiatives such as Skate Plazas and its sponsorship of global and regional skateboarders.

Thirteen years later, DC stands as a global brand whose product line has expanded to include men’s, women’s and kids’ skateboarding and lifestyle shoes, apparel, outerwear, and accessories such as bags, keychains, wallets and belts. DC continues to stay true to its original mission—to make a significant change.

PHILIPPINE ROOTS

Having recently opened its 10th store in the Philippines, DC’s latest branch in SM Megamall offers the complete line of exciting possibilities to elevate street fashion. With a variety of styles for both men and women, the American brand has already attracted a loyal following cultivated through local action-sports enthusiasts who recognize the brand for its high quality and

innovative line of apparel and footwear that also boasts of unique innovations to help them perform better in their sport. From skateboarding, BMX, Rally, Motocross, and surfing, DC has elevated action sports performance as its paramount priority.

The brand’s line of graphic-print shirts are perfect for both guys and girls who enjoy comfortable clothes, while other apparel such as hoodies and pullovers come in a variety of colors as well as caps, belts, and bags make for great add-ons to complete your “street” look. And with the brand’s new lifestyle collection

that is out this year, expect more awesome finds from DC such as chinos and board shorts for guys while for girls, there’s a great line of cute dresses, blouses, and jeans for everyday wear or other casual events.

Since launching its kids and toddler footwear line a year ago, DC has been able to enjoy positive feedback from the Philippine market thanks to parents who found the new line very impressive.

MORE IN STORE

In addition to DC’s creative line of footwear styles, the brand also incorporates different technological innovations to elevate the type of shoes that DC has offer. It has recently come out with its Unilite TM technology, for its “Lighter Shoes Weigh Less” campaign. Through the Unilite TM midsole, shoes are more lightweight, and provide better support to the wearer’s feet without the additional weight.

Next up is the “Life Collection,” which is geared towards lifestyle and fashion featuring sneakers and slip-on footwear that have edgy designs which you can wear as your dress sneakers or even when heading out on a surf trip. It also incorporates the DC Pill Pattern which has a trademark sticky rubber outsole that keeps one from slipping. One of the highlights of the Life Collection is the Studio Shoe, a new kind of footwear that makes use of bounce suede – a cool new innovation that keeps your shoes stain-free, like with beer spills. It’s also dust resistant to keep your kicks fresh and clean, especially if you have a planned night out with the ladies.

FREEDOM DOLLY

Another exciting thing to look forward to from DC is Freedom Dolly, a popular brand for skateboards which DC is now offering in its stores. Famous for its handmade and ecologically harvested bamboo longboards and cruiser skateboards, it is a subsidiary brand of Quiksilver, Inc. as well as DC.

DPWH upgrading nationwide voice and data infrastructure using Alcatel-Lucent technology

Manila, Philippines - The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) recently signed a contract with Alcatel-Lucent, one of the world’s leading communications technology providers, to utilize the latter’s proprietary technology to modernize the communications infrastructure of DPWH offices across the country.

“The project is a critical component of our ICT infrastructure which enables us to improve transparency, increase internal controls, and realize the benefits of our IT-enabled process improvements as part of the Department’s Transformation Program,” DPWH Monitoring and Information Service Director Elizabeth Yap said.

Alcatel-Lucent’s umbrella solution, comprised of several cutting-edge technologies, will provide DPWH with a cost-efficient voice and data network infrastructure to facilitate effective service delivery to both the public and private sector. The project is set to cover the voice and data needs of more than 10,000 DPWH employees across 100 sites nationwide.

“Our solution allows the ease of data and service delivery from head office to regional branches and district centers. This allows the DPWH to significantly cut down transport costs, and facilitate clear communication. Instead of traveling to far-flung offices, they can just schedule a convenient, uninterrupted conference call with the use of these technologies,” said Goulds Castillo Jr., the Country Manager of the Enterprise arm of Alcatel-Lucent in the Philippines.

The new IP or Internet protocol-based infrastructure links computers, applications and servers to a single data center in the DPWH headquarters across all DPWH offices nationwide.

Included in Alcatel-Lucent’s solution package is its OmniPCX Enterprise technology, which will improve the voice capabilities of DPWH’s internal communications system, and the OmniSwitch and OmniAccess solutions, which will ensure efficient data transmission from one office site to another.

Alcatel-Lucent sees great potential in the technology for use in other public sectors, as well as by private enterprises. “This technology can also be used by agencies and businesses across various industries which have operations in far-flung areas from Batanes to Jolo,” said Castillo.
